Happy Friday!

It has been a very busy start to the new semester for everyone here at DISK!

In math, we finished our first addition unit last week, and began our subtraction unit this week. In science, we learned and practiced some inquiry skills. We predicted, measured and compared rainfall - a lot of rainfall! We also did a fingerprint investigation, where we observed, classified and compared our fingerprints. Very fun!

For social studies, we have learned about what makes a good citizen, our rights and responsibilities, and how we can be good members of our DISK community. Students also voted for the school president and the class leader!

Finally, in language arts, we have been busy getting our Daily 5 routine up and running. Students showed fantastic stamina, reaching up to 10 minutes of independent read to self time this week. We have also been practicing our writing skills, and working on our spelling.

  • With the rain finally stopping and the sun starting to shine, the mosquitoes will be coming out. This area of Kaohsiung has a larger than average population of mosquitoes, and risk of dengue fever. Therefore, please use insect repellent help keep the bloodsuckers at bay! Our school cleaning staff will check for standing water and spray bathrooms and other possibly affected areas.
  • Homework can be found on Google Classroom, as well as in student assignment books.
  • Check out Mathletics for some extra math practice!

Have a fantastic weekend!

P.S. A big happy birthday to Jeremy Li, who's birthday is the Sunday - have a great day, Jeremy!

Dear Parents and Students,
WELCOME TO GRADE ONE!  My name is Ben Harris, and I am delighted to be teaching your children for the upcoming school year. I am a certified teacher, originally from the UK, and have lived here in Taiwan for 5 years. I have been an educator since 2010, teaching in South Korea, Canada, and here in Taiwan, where I met my fiancée, Chantal. I like my classroom to be student-centered, with a focus on positivity, empathy and teamwork. I like to encourage my students to take responsibility for their own learning, and to help each other achieve their goals.
NEW AT DISK Over the summer, DISK underwent some major changes. We have an amazing new computer lab, several Smart Boards, an Audio Visual room, new classroom computers and state of the art wiring throughout the school. Plus, we have subscribed to some incredible online programs such as RAZ Kids for Reading, Mathletics for mathematics, and Encyclopedia Britannica for science and social studies research. I am thrilled to see all of the opportunities these changes are providing for our learning!
GOOGLE CLASSROOM & BLOG  In addition to student assignment books, Grade 1 homework will be posted on Google Classroom. To access this, you just need to accept the Google Classroom invitations that I send you.  In addition, we will use a classroom blog ( for sharing pictures, updates and reminders.
PARENT & TEACHER COMMUNICATION  Healthy communication between parents and teachers greatly supports students, and increases their learning. I intend to be in regular contact with you throughout the school year. To get started, I’d love to hear all about my new student. Please see the attached request for information, “A Million Words or Fewer,” and tell me all about your child!
Please don’t hesitate to contact me via email at if you have any questions or concerns, however big or small!

Mr. Ben Harris
