October 19th, 2018

Good afternoon,

It's Friday and the weekend is here! It has been a busy week in grade 1. In reading class we have started our new Journey's story, Tomas Rivera, and practiced long o sounds with oa and ow. In ELA, we began our narrative writing unit by practicing our past tense verbs and describing the beginning, middle and ending of a commercial.

In math we've been working on our subtraction strategies and in social studies we talked about producers, consumers and trade. Finally, in science we began our plant unit by planting seeds in the DISK garden - fun!

  • Flu season is coming. Please fill-out and return the blue forms if you want your child to get a flu shot.
  • All Saints Day is on Friday, October 26th. Parents are welcome to attend!
  • Lower Elementary Student Showcase is on November 16th.
  • Thanksgiving & Book Fair Day is on November 22nd.

Enjoy the weekend!

It's Friday! All exams are finished and students can relax this weekend. Quarter 2 will begin on Monday. We will start narrative writing in ELA, subtraction strategies in math, and also learn about maps and landscapes in social studies.

We also begin our new science unit on plants. For this plant unit, we are going to grow and study our own plants and flowers on the school campus. To assist with this, I would like to ask students to bring some seeds - preferably fast growing ones - to school next week.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Good afternoon parents and students,

It's been a real pleasure to see my students collaborating and cooperating in their studies. They have been working hard and helping each other study for their exams. Three down and two to go!

We do not have school tomorrow (Happy 10/10 everyone!) so I will see everyone back on Thursday for our Science exam. Have a good Wednesday!

Hello everyone,

Today I am sending home the study guides for all five homeroom subjects. Students have from 9/25 - 10/4 to work through them. In addition to working on them at home, we will go through them in class next week.

Good afternoon parents and students,

We've been learning and practicing our doubles facts in math this week. Students have been using the strategies count ondouble +1 and double -1 to solve math problems. They have an extra math packet to work on over the long weekend.

In social studies we learned about making choices and the difference between needs and wants. Students learned that goods and services can be scarce.

In ELA we did some descriptive writing. Students described their snacks using their 5 senses - and then ate them! In reading class, Raz kids is up and running. The students all really enjoy using it, and are encouraged to read as much as possible at home. In phonics we reviewed ou and ow sounds (eg. house, flower).

Lastly, the students were very busy engineers in science class this week. We learned that engineers are people who solve problems. We learned about different types of bridges - beam, truss, and arch - and we followed the design process to plan, build, test and improve our own bridges. So much fun!

  • Use Raz-kids and Mathletics for extra reading and math practice.
  • Next week is a 2-day week. We only have school on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thank you for reading, and have a fantastic loooooong weekend!

Mr. Harris
